At JOST, we firmly believe that the true strength of a company lies in the people behind it. Today, we’re proud to share the story of Judith Hugo, a dedicated team member for nearly 20 years, whose passion for her work is matched only by her deep connection to animals.
A grounded life, rooted in nature and commitment
Judith lives in the hills above Malmedy, surrounded by her family, dogs, horses, and ponies. A peaceful setting that perfectly reflects her values: respect, attentiveness, and empathy.
“I spend a lot of time caring for animals. It’s become a personal mission — to give them a life that respects their natural environment, far from the constraints we often place on them without realizing it.”
Growing up in the countryside, Judith has always been surrounded by animals. But it was during her daughters’ horseback riding lessons that she began to question certain common practices in the equestrian world.
“Horses were often kept in small stalls, ridden daily, and fed only at specific times... It was nothing like the freedom they should have in nature.”
Flash’s story: a turning point
One particular horse marked a major shift in Judith’s life: Flash, a small blond horse with a strong personality. Rejected by several riding schools and frequently mistreated for not fitting in, Flash was a regular presence in her daughters’ riding sessions.
“One day, I told the riding school owner: ‘I’m buying this horse. I don’t want anyone riding him anymore.’ And that’s how Flash came to live with us.”
Over time, the family welcomed more animals and made the conscious decision to give them a life free from exploitation. This commitment also led them to reevaluate their lifestyle choices.
“We chose to become vegetarians. Out of respect — to avoid making distinctions between animals. It’s a way to stay true to our values.”
A life philosophy based on listening
This close connection to animals has become a true life school for Judith. It brings her valuable lessons that carry over into her professional life as well: patience, observation, and adaptability.
“Animals have their own way of communicating. They don’t use words, but they tell us so much. You just have to be willing to listen.”
She smiles as she recalls a telling anecdote: one evening, two ponies managed to escape into a nearby field. It was the other horses who came to find her and alert her to the situation.
“It was a perfect example of silent, yet very clear communication. It reminds me every day how important it is to pay attention to what’s around us.”
Finding balance between personal life and professional commitment
Judith has been working at JOST for nearly two decades. Her journey reflects the diversity and richness of profiles within the company — and the value that each person brings.
“Being surrounded by animals helps keep me grounded. It resets my focus. And I believe it influences how I work and collaborate with others as well.”
At JOST, we value the human stories, the ones that inspire, that raise questions, and that give meaning.
Thank you, Judith, for reminding us that even in a technical world like transport and logistics, there is always room for listening, respect, and empathy.
