The profession of heavy-duty mechanic has evolved profoundly. Far from the clichés of a simple wrench, it is now a complete, technical, connected, and constantly transforming profession. Electromechanics, electronic diagnostics, gas, diesel, safety… The 2025 technician must be trained, curious, versatile, and rigorous.

At JOST, this profession takes its full meaning. Through the eyes and hands of Mekni Abderahmen – known on TikTok as Abdou Continental – the full richness of this profession is expressed: commitment, know-how, modernity.

A complete profession, between mechanics and technology

Today, a heavy-duty mechanic does not just replace parts. He diagnoses, measures, analyzes, adjusts.

“This is no longer like before. Today, without diagnosis, you do nothing. It's the foundation.”

Using multi-brand computer tools, technicians query the vehicle, detect anomalies, clear fault codes, adjust engine parameters. The link between the truck and the technician is direct, almost intuitive. It's intelligent, connected mechanics.

Diesel, gas, electric: a changing profession

The arrival of gas technologies (LNG), and tomorrow, electric or hydrogen, also transforms day-to-day work.

Mekni is currently working on an Iveco gas engine, a first in his career, which he describes enthusiastically.

“It’s like on a gasoline car: there are spark plugs, coils. It's a different approach, but it's exciting.”

Changing a cylinder head, checking valve clearance, testing ignition sensors... The job requires precision and composure, especially on sensitive systems where safety is paramount.

Electromechanic: versatility as the standard

To work on these complex systems, the technician must be a mechanic, an electrician, a diagnostician, and a hydraulics specialist.

“Today, a mechanic can no longer work alone. You have to be an electromechanic. You have to understand current, pressure, signals.”

Continuous training is therefore essential to stay up to date. Technicians regularly train with manufacturers (Iveco, Mercedes, Renault…) to incorporate the latest technological advances.

A profession of safety and responsibility

Each intervention has one goal: to put a 100% reliable vehicle back on the road.

Before each technical inspection, mechanics meticulously inspect:

  • steering, brakes, suspension
  • lighting, leaks, pressures
  • correct locking of the fifth wheel
  • and of course, any electronic faults via diagnostics

The safety of the driver, road users, and the vehicle depends on this rigor.

“Here, I check everything. Any leak, any play, I have to see it. It’s my responsibility.”

A passion that crosses borders

Mekni has worked in Algeria, Libya, Qatar, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, then in France. For over a year, he has worked in Belgium at JOST, in a multicultural environment.

“This profession made me travel. And no matter the country, the passion is the same.”

Today, he shares his daily life online. On TikTok, his videos attract thousands of views. He shows the realities of the profession, inspires, and transmits.

A profession of the future, human and technical

The heavy-duty mechanic profession is undergoing transformation. It attracts new profiles: technology enthusiasts, mechanics, but also young people, people in career transition. Because this profession is above all a profession with meaning, where every gesture counts.

At JOST, we believe that good tools are nothing without the right people. And that versatility, training, and safety must go hand in hand with passion and recognition for the profession.
